The legend tells that this is a conciliation cross where a farmer was slayn for a big bag he carried back home from the market. But the thief and murderer only found fresh butter in the bag the farmer had changed for a sheep on the market. The murderer was caught and had to set up a stone cross at the very place as atonement. For this reason the cross is called “Butter Cross”.
But probably the granitic cross was only a landmark along the church path of Sparow set up in 19th century to guide travelling villagers, traders, craftspeople and wayfarers the way between Sparow and Alt Schwerin through the swampland of Lake Drewitz.
